Chapter 13
Kirsten kept her back to the door of the bunkhouse, looking across the room at the man and woman perched on one of the beds. Georgina Rogers had one hand on Johann Steinâs, and her head was hung low. Stein hadnât looked up at Kirsten since sheâd brought them into the bunkhouse, and Kirsten thought she could see tears in his eyes.
Kirsten waited several minutes before popping briefly outside the bunkhouse to check if anyone else was there. When the surrounding area had no movement, she stepped back inside, ready to question the man and find out what was going on.
âYouâre Johann Stein?â
The man nodded. âThatâs my name, but she has nothing to do with this. Please, donât take her. Donât take her away from her kids.â
âSheâs got my kids,â said Georgina. âShe told me sheâs got them.â
Stein looked up with eyes of horror at Kirsten. âYou canât do this. You donât do this sort of thing. Youâre clearly British service.â
âI could be a mercenary working for anyone,â offered Kirsten, wanting to keep her independence from the subject matter, and to try and find out what was really happening, âWhatâs so terrible that youâre going to put into motion that I shouldnât fulfil my contract?â
âYou donât understand the secret I have. Itâs terrible. It could kill millions, start wars, and finish them. You canâtâyou canât do this.â
âSo, what, do you have information? Some sort of missile? I was told that you worked for the UK Defence, been looking at their nuclear arsenal and deployment abilities; is that right?â
The man hung his head. Georgina put her arm around him. âYou need to tell her. If itâs as bad as you told me, you need to tell her.â
The man looked at the woman. âDonât say that. Sheâll think you know, torture you for the information when you know nothing.â
âThen tell me the information and trust me,â said Kirsten. âIâm all ears. I want to know what youâre on about.â
âIf I told you, would you believe me, or would you just carry out your orders anyway? Surely they told you why Iâm so important.â
âI told you, Iâm a mercenary. As far as Iâm concerned, Iâm taking you in. If you want any other outcome, Iâm here, and Iâm listening.â
âI donât work on the nuclear side of things. Iâm a biochemist, and I developed an agent. One that would devastate, kill with a rapid spread. You could plant it easily in a population. Inside of a week, theyâd all be dead. Itâs like a nuclear bomb, you understand?â
âSurely thereâs some deterrent against the biological weapon. It can be treated. You can put a cure on it.â
âNo. Thereâs not,â said Stein. âI destroyed the work for that reason. Once I made it, looked at it; I thought this is too dangerous. If one side gets this, it will dominate the other side.â
âI thought you worked for the UK. I thought youâd be at peace with that. After all, theyâd hold it and keep it until they needed it.
